Vice President of Operations

Are you skilled at formulating and administering organizational policies?  On behalf of our client, 3form, we are conducting a search for a Vice President of Operations who will plan, direct, coordinate, and oversee operations activities across the organization.  This person will be ensuring the development and implementation of efficient operations and cost-effective systems to meet the current and future needs of the organization. 

3form is an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of translucent architectural panels, lighting, products, and installation systems. Located in Salt Lake City, Utah, our product portfolio ranges from a complete line of environmentally-focused, award-winning resin and glass-based materials, lighting, and sophisticated solutions for the architectural and interior design customer.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities

  • Implement and coach Lean Manufacturing methodologies throughout the company to improve business performance in the areas of improved productivity, manufacturing process times, and reduced inventories. 
  • Be responsible for both internal/external benchmarking to aid in the discovery of improved practices. Focus on the velocity of product flow and improved quality with on-time delivery to customer requirements.
  • Ensure manufacturing best practices, processes, and procedures are defined, documented, communicated, and implemented.
  • Improve metrics and reporting reliability utilized across the organization to track operational performance and compliance.
  • Improve and develop safe processes, systems, and tools that are consistent across the organization.
  • Manage the global supply chain through direct and indirect relationships with plants, vendors, technology groups, and quality organizations.
  • Ensure early involvement of manufacturing in the product development process to enable optimal component selection, effective technology transfer, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
  • Provide oversight for the strategic vision and accomplishment of financial milestones.
  • Represent “best-in-class” leadership, demonstrating strong business ethics, personal integrity, moral consistency, and the ability to lead effectively.
  • Foster teamwork to remove obstacles and break down barriers to advance continuous improvement and organizational learning. 
  • Create a lean, learning organization of highly skilled personnel with personal accountability at all levels. 
  • Drive empowerment to its lowest point and create a culture of speed and agility.                     

 

Primary Duties

  • Manage 8 subordinate supervisors, all of which supervise a number of employees within their respective departments. Also, directly supervise two non-supervisory employees. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. 
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. 
  • Own on-time delivery, quality, and gross margin. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Power BI and/or similar data reporting tools.
  • Production includes production, assembly, shipping and receiving, facilities and maintenance, purchasing, environmental health & safety, and training.
  • Providing leadership to all aspects of the manufacturing operations.
  • Facilitating coaching, counseling, and guiding of the manufacturing work group to ensure they can deliver year-over-year improving results.
  • Educating, developing, and motivating a manufacturing work group to achieve required production results.
  • Developing and implementing operating policies and procedures to achieve stated goals.
  • Exercising direct supervision over general supervisors and line supervisors with respect to production volume, cost, and quality of production to meet production schedules and delivery dates.

 

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Providing business leadership that demonstrates a commitment to factory goals on a day-to-day basis.
  • Ensuring effective interchange of information between all work groups.
  • Managing KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) in Safety, Quality, Delivery, Productivity, Cost, and special projects.
  • Coordinating manufacturing activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment.
  • Developing and enforcing procedures for all employees to attain production goals.
  • Communicating operational goals and KPIs to site personnel and leading in such a way that the factory’s goals are clearly identifiable and owned by all personnel.
  • Strategically look for ways to ensure the continued growth of the organization.
  • Staying up to date with all marketing and sales activities that could affect production.

 

Facility and Production Support

  • Working with the Facilities Maintenance Manager and Environmental Health and Safety personnel to ensure that the facility is maintained to provide a safe workplace that is compliant with all regulatory standards.
  • Coordinating production activities along with procurement, maintenance, production planning, safety, and quality control activities to obtain optimal use of employee and equipment resources.
  • Developing and maintaining a short- and long-term development plan focused on safety, quality, cost, and productivity.
  • Exercising direct supervision over general supervisors and line supervisors with respect to production volume, cost, and quality of production to meet production schedules and delivery dates.
  • Coordinating with the Factory Supervisors the execution of manufacturing schedules based on sales requirements and plant capacity.
  • Maintaining accurate inventory and ensuring proper storage of received raw materials.
  • Leading purchasing and planning personnel.

 

Lean/Continuous Improvement Responsibilities

  • Continually coaching, directing, and training employees utilizing Lean principles.
  • Utilizing available data including OEE, line speed target, and efficiency and process data to continuously improve productivity, uptime, and reliability.
  • Striving for continuous improvement in manufacturing processes to ensure efficiencies and eliminate waste, and implementing such plans through people, processes, procedures, and equipment.
  • Actively engaging factory personnel in the process of Continuous Improvement and Problem-Solving.

 

Financial Objective Responsibilities

  • Leading efforts with the finance department to ensure that realistic labor and manufacturing costs are provided for the determination of costs of products and budgeting purposes.
  • Assisting in the development of operational and capital budgets, policies and procedures, and the execution of the same.
  • Controlling and minimizing labor overtime, capital, and repair expenses.
  • Reviewing all recommendations for special machinery, and working closely with engineering personnel regarding product and process improvement and new product development.
  • Participating in long-range plant expansion, conversion, and equipment planning.

Qualifications + Requirements

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; 10 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least seven 5 to 7 years of experience in a Leadership and/or management production role
  • Evidenced track record of driving improved operational performance and business growth and optimization

  • In-Person (this position cannot be performed remotely).

  • May be required to regularly stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time, lift or carry more than 50 pounds, climb/balance on stairs or ladders, stoop, kneel, and crouch.

Language Skills                                            

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills                                                    

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability                                                        

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
