Summary

On behalf of our client, Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore (GSMISTS), we are conducting a search for the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer.

The CEO partners with the council’s Board of Directors to carry out GSMISTS’s mission, vision and strategic plan. Keys to the success of leading this council are increased and diversified membership growth, higher-impact programming, and strengthening the Girl Scouts brand across the communities in this region.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities

Overall, the CEO will act in partnership with the board of directors to enhance the outcomes of all council functions to be one of the nation’s leaders in membership services and innovation. The CEO will direct the corporate strategic plan through the formulation and implementation of short to long-range strategic objectives and actions needed to achieve the council’s goals. The new CEO will hire, inspire, align, and lead a high-performing team, ensuring that diversity is a core value within the council’s activities and functions, promoting opportunities for participation in every aspect of Girl Scouting.

Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership, support, and direction to ensure that the mission and core values of Girl Scouting are put into practice within the council jurisdiction.
  • Facilitate the strategic planning process by providing historical data and guidance in the formulation, integration, and implementation of long- and short-term operating objectives and actions to support the business strategy.
  • Together with the Director of Membership, bolster membership growth by initiating reach and retention strategies specific to the council service area; continually evaluate and advise on the impact of programs aimed at stimulating membership growth.
  • Collaborate with the Board and management team to develop, enhance, and implement policies, procedures and systems that will improve the overall capacity of the council’s structures, processes, and operations and the effectiveness of its delivery systems.
  • Lead the council’s branding, marketing and public relations efforts. Develop relationships with influential stakeholders, including media, affinity and networking groups, individual donors, foundations, and volunteer and parent groups. Represent the council in all community events and activities.
  • Build a high-performing, cohesive leadership team. Together, with staff and volunteers, champion a culture of individual and team development. Ensure HR systems will yield talented, passionate staff and volunteers who will work hand-in-hand to support the Girl Scout mission. Provide individual coaching and guidance to all direct reports on the GSMISTS leadership team.
  • Oversee the development and execution of fund development strategies to enable the council to meet growth objectives.  Ensure the financial health and integrity of the council by employing sound fiscal controls and by effectively integrating, managing, and leveraging the council’s resources and assets.  Provide strategic financial input and leadership on key decisions affecting the organization’s overall budget.
  • Advocate for the advancement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Access measures throughout the council’s programming and culture. Participate in and foster these values through words, actions and attitude.
  • Create open, transparent lines and communication and reporting with the Board of Directors. Participate in all Board and, when necessary, Committee activities.
  • Align with the national organization to carry out the purpose of the Girl Scout movement as set forth in the Preamble to the Constitution of Girl Scouts of the U.S. A., to ensure that charter requirements are met, and to obtain information and resources related to operational and governance issues.  
  • Ensure the corporate and legal responsibilities of the council are fulfilled by staying informed on legislation and current legal requirements and by keeping the Board of Directors apprised of pertinent trends and legislative activities that affect the work of the council.
  • Work in partnership with the national organization to promote the national policy agenda and implement a unified policy voice and advocacy strategy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 5-10 years of non-profit leadership experiences, preferably as a top-level leader in the organization. Within the non-profit arena, demonstrated experience in the following functional areas is desired:
    • Board relations, development and communications
    • Strategic planning and execution
    • Community relations and marketing
    • Fundraising and fund development strategy
    • Financial/budget management (experience managing budgets of $4M+ is a plus)
    • Volunteer-run programming
  • Seasoned team leadership abilities, including hiring, developing and creating high-performance teams driven by passion and goal achievement measures.
  • Commitment to integrating the values of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access into their professional work, both culturally and programmatically.
  • Superior written, verbal and public communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing programs that increase membership, engagement or revenues, particularly in a non-profit setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a federated model like that of the Girl Scouts of USA is a plus.
